Near 03:50
Far off in the stars' the origin of who we are. The universe, darling, is huge of course, But in it floats the Earth, Small and blue with two berths for me and you. From the China Sea to the Andean peaks, Everywhere you’re near me. The atmosphere’s warm skin holds us in, Shielding our orbiting place from the lonely cold of space. Light years, vast fears, But here you are on this sphere, near me. Deep down in the core, high heat’s making more Fire and ice. Your eyes, Paradise, we meet in the street Wandering through stellar foam, Always near, anywhere we roam, Together and alone, near.

about

This year and last, we’ve all missed someone, lost someone, been separated from someone. This song is about those people, scattered around the globe. For each of us there’s at least one person enchanted from the past, a remnant character from another story, whom we may imagine gone forever, out of reach, never to be touched or seen face to face again, though we know they still breathe and throb somewhere. Perhaps they’ve left the corporeal realm but linger in our memory-mind so strongly that we still catch of whiff of them in a few special spaces. We may fantasize colliding with this long-lost person, as we drift half-dreaming down a city street, our mind holding them almost unnoticed, like a penny in one’s pocket, touching with a fingertip the small chance they’ll appear, incarnate or not, for an unexpected encounter. They may be thinking of us too, mind tendrils stretched across the circumferent miles. We may feel touched by something in a split second without knowing why. Perhaps we’re thinking of or feeling each other across the miles at the same moment but don’t realize it.

This worldwide separation from each other, this universal absence, has in a weird way connected us, because it’s happened everywhere. The separation has brought us together. We share it. So that’s what this song is about: missing someone far away, yet feeling they are close because we share a planet, on which we may someday run into each other and meet again.

I wrote it years ago but feel finally comfortable sharing it now. This release is of two versions: one in my own voice, and one sung as if to heaven by the wonderful Blythe Gruda (‘Near, Siren Version’). Once upon a time she and I performed this song together live. Julian Maile played guitar; Eddie Eyeball played bass guitar.

On the accompanying video, some essential help was contributed by Orlando S. Gondar. The animations were made by Michaela Müller.
